Bed Mattress Sizes

Knowing the exact bed mattress sizes helps you choose the right size goose down comforter.

  • A twin mattress is 39x75 inches: Choose a twin down comforter 66 to 68 inches wide and 86 to 88 inches long.
  • For a 54x75-inch full-size mattress, a goose down comforter should be 81 to 84 inches wide and 86 to 88 inches long.
  • A 60x80 inch queen-size mattress needs an 86- to 88-inch wide down comforter that is 96 to 100 inches long.
  • A standard/eastern/king mattress that is 76 to 78 wide and 80 inches long will need a down comforter 102 inches wide and 86 to 88 inches long.
  • The California king, 72x84 inches, will only look good with a goose down comforter 107 to 110 inches wide and 96 to 98 inches long.

You can find a down comforter to fit any size bed at a discount online.

Caring for Down Comforters - Dry Well

If you wash a goose down comforter at home, you must dry the goose down comforter with gentle heat in the clothes dryer. To expose damp areas, remove and adjust the down comforter several times during the drying cycle. Then return the goose down comforter to the dryer for another cycle. Finally, hang a goose down comforter out to air dry for at least 24 hours to make sure all sections are dry before replacing the goose down comforter on your bed.

500 Fill Power Down Is Average

Higher fill power ratings indicate that a single ounce of goose down occupies more space and is therefore of higher quality than down that fills less space. Higher fill power down looks fluffier. The lowest quality down has a fill power of around 300 cubic inches per ounce. Average department store comforters have about 500 to 550 fill power. A luxury high fill power comforter with more warmth and less weight, offers a comfortable, healthy way to sleep.

Bed Skirts and Down Comforter Sets

You've never approved of miniskirts that show your rose tattoo, but you think it's the height of prissiness to have a long bedskirt with a down comforter set. If you have a twin extra long bed with a down comforter, you may need that 18" or 21" drop bedskirt--drop refers to how tall a bedskirt is, like the drop off the mountain you won't climb in a micro-mini. The drop is the distance from the floor to the top of the box spring. A longer drop bedskirt in the same maroon as your down comforter cover may make the whole bed and especially the comforter down look top-heavy, depending on the height of your mattress.

One solution is to use bed lifters with lesser-height beds that have down comforter sets. That way, your black down comforter looks loftier and taller rather than drowning your bed in fabric. Remember that you can take your bedskirt home and try it with your bed and down comforter set.

Most down comforter sets include a bedskirt that's coordinated with the comforter, so beware when buying a separate bed skirt. If your down comforter is a stand-alone, take a sample of the down comforter cover, measure your bed, and judge how your down comforter hangs over the sides of the bed. Then take the fabric swatch to a seamstress and have a custom bed skirt made. Now you have a bed skirt and down comforter that are the right height. But you still won't wear a micro-mini.

White Or Gray Goose Down Covers

You've decided that you prefer shades of grey and have opted for a grey goose comforter rather than a white goose down comforter. Unfortunately, others may not like seeing shades of grey. Just call yourself a complex thinker. Even you have to admit, though, that grey goose down looks unsightly through a white, light-colored or translucent duvet.

Although higher thread counts will block out the light and hide the grey, your goose down comforter looks like a storm cloud. Opt for darker patterned or solid color goose comforter duvets when choosing grey goose down comforters. You could let your preference for grey dominate and buy grey-covered rather than white-covered goose down comforters.

If you do choose white or light fabric for grey goose comforters, select a duvet cover in a darker solid color or pattern. Truth be told, all those shades of grey are beginning to confuse you too. How about a nice plaid?
