August 22, 2008, Newsletter Issue #131: Sheets With Deep Pockets

Tip of the Week

Your pockets may not be deep, but your well-meaning best friend tells you that you should have a bed sheet with deep pockets. Doesn't that sound a little pricey? Not at all. Deep pockets are those thick corners of fabric that make folding your fitted bed sheet frustrating.

But difficult folding aside, deep pockets simply help your discount bed sheet fit your pillow top mattress better. You don't want your sheet to constantly slide off in the middle of the night. For a 14-inch mattress, try an 18-inch deep fitted luxury bed sheet. If your mattress is a king or a cal king (also known as a western king), a fitted satin bed sheet will fit one or the other, not both, since the Cal king is longer.

If you're choosing kids' bedding or baby bedding, you probably don't need a fitted bed sheet, but for adult mattresses, a luxury bed sheet with deep pockets is ideal and doesn't cost much more than a flat bed sheet. You'll spend more money trying to replace a sheet that doesn't fit properly. Trust your best friend's advice. After all, she did help you avoid disaster with that couch-potato boyfriend.
