What are some tips on washing and cleaning down comforters?

Washing and Cleaning Down Comforters

Wash your goose down comforter occasionally to keep it fresh. The less you wash your down comforter, the longer it will last. Dry cleaning a down comforter is effective but expensive. When washing down comforters yourself, use a front loading washing machine. Use a laundry detergent without dyes, since dyes can stain your goose down comforter. Wash your down comforter in cold water and a small amount of detergent but do not use fabric softener.

I am going to try this. My duvet is very old and not baffle boxed but I figure I have nothing to lose and dry cleaning is VERY expensive. I let youinow how I make out.

Here's an update. I washed the comforter in an ordinary washing machine (no access to a laundromat), using cold water detergent and cold water. I had to check a few times and push the duvet down to make sure it was covered with water. I put it through the rinse cycle twice. I dried it with 4 clean tennis shoes for 100 minutes on the normal drying cycle and then hung it outdoors on the clothesline on a sunny windy day for 6 hours. The duvet has regained some loft and looks and smells great. Thanks for the tips- I am very pleased with the results

I would not recommend dry cleaning unless it has been suggested by the manufacturer.
